Torean Routes
The Torean route is a slightly sloping route to Telaga Lake. This route is also popular with climbers when descending from the lake with views of waterfalls, rivers and dense forests. Having a diverse natural landscape makes the Torean Mount Rinjani Route a challenging mountain for climbers. It’s like being in another part of the world, making anyone who passes this route sigh and be amazed as soon as they start entering the valley of the Torean climbing route. How could it not be, this route presents expanses of savanna, lakes, waterfalls, tropical forests, river flows, hot springs, stretches of sand, rocky cliff landscapes and Mount Baru Jari which are some of the many natural phenomena and attractions that Mount Rinjani National Park has.
The gate to the Torean route is located between the vegetation boundary between dense tropical forests and residential areas of local residents. Tropical forests will be the first landscape you encounter if you decide to climb Mount Rinjani via the Torean route. The forest on this route stretches wide, overgrown with pine, suren, rattan, forest starfruit and ferns. The trees form a canopy that is quite dense, providing a habitat for animals at the foot of the mountain. Srigunta birds fly and perch on the tops of the trees, until the sound of monkeys echoes from a distance, creating a panorama that you will feel when you first pass through this forest.
When you continue halfway through the Torean route, you will find the unique and iconic landscape of this route which is said to be like a Jurassic Park world. The route passes through a valley flanked by two towering mountain ridges with views of green hills, majestic standing rock cliffs and views of the sky and clouds. The beauty of the beautiful stream flowing in the valley when walking along a cliff ridge or climbing a hill also adds to the beauty and exoticism of this route. The interesting thing is that some of the tributaries look different in color, namely milky white and turquoise green. In fact, this tributary flows with the Kokok Puteh River, which is the main river that is very well known to the Sasak Bayan people. Despite its panoramic beauty, the Torean Route is quite dangerous and extreme, especially when heading into valleys and when on mountain ridges. The steep valley zone is coupled with a route that only contains a narrow footpath. In some parts, climbers also have to pass through a road that has ravines 50-100 meters deep on either side with safety equipment installed along the mountain ridge. Therefore, climbing Mount Rinjani via the Torean route is not recommended at night because of the extreme route and lack of safety on the route, especially when on ridges and valleys.
When you are on the mountain ridge you will also find a spring that is very fresh and is believed to be the cleanest and most delicious spring on Mount Rinjani. The steep route up the ridge with a slope of up to 60 degrees has been traversed and ends with a gentle track. After passing through the amazing ridges and valleys, you will find Goa Susu and Goa Taman close to Lake Segara Anak. Goa Taman contains water which is considered sacred by the Sasak people. Not far from Goa Taman there is another cave that is considered sacred, namely Goa Susu. In Goa Susu, you often meet dozens of local residents who soak in the hot springs, which they believe can cure various diseases.
The climb via the Torean route ends at Segara Anak Lake at an altitude of around 2,000 meters above sea level. This lake, which is an ancient caldera formed by the powerful eruption of Mount Samalas in 1257, is the meeting place of the Torean route with two other Rinjani climbing routes, namely Sembalun and Senaru.
The Torean route offers diverse and exotic natural landscapes, giving it unusual panoramas and views. The curves of the two ridges, which are dominated by green expanses of savanna, grass and weeds, really give a charming feel to anyone who passes by.
