Senaru Waterfalls

Apart from Gili, there are also many waterfalls in Lombok which are no less interesting at the foot of Mount Rinjani in Senaru village, Bayan subdistrict, waterfalls which can be an alternative tourist destination besides Gili and the beaches in Lombok. There are two waterfalls that are most often visited by tourists, namely Sendang Gile waterfall and Tiu Kelep waterfall, which are unique and favorite places.

It turns out that Sendang Gile Waterfall has an interesting history. There are at least two versions originating from local residents. The first is that the Sendang Gile waterfall is a bathing pool for angels. So, when angels come down to earth, they will stop and bathe in this place.

The second version is the origin of the name Sendang Gile itself. Sendang Gile was originally a sentence that said sengang gile which means crazy lion. It is called a mad lion because in the past there was destruction by lions in one of the villages.

The local residents looked for him in the forest and one of the residents found a waterfall while looking for this crazy lion, named Sengang Gile. Gradually, the name changed to Sendang Gile. Apart from that, this waterfall is also called Batu Ko’ (buffalo rock).

This waterfall is in Mount Rinjani National Park. On the climbing route to the top of Rinjani, tourists will first find this waterfall. It is believed that the flow of the waterfall is a flow of water originating from Lake Segara Anak which is also located around the location of Mount Rinjani.

This waterfall has a height of approximately 600 meters above sea level. The depth is about 31 meters from the river bed. Sendang Gile waterfall has two levels. The first level from the peak, the water flows or plunges into a pool that is between the first and second levels. Meanwhile, the second level is the flow of the pool water which plunges downwards and flows with the river at the base of the waterfall.

This waterfall has a clear water flow and flows rapidly from a rock cliff that rises as high as 42 meters in layers. The atmosphere around Tiu Kelep Waterfall is still very beautiful and natural. You can enjoy the coolness of the tropical rain forest with large, lush trees along the trekking route to the waterfall location.
The name for Tiu Kelep Waterfall is taken from the Sasak language, namely “tiu” which means swimming pool and “telep” which means fly. It is named so because the clear water flows everywhere. Local people believe that Tiu Kelep’s clear water can make you stay young, make the body healthy and restore stamina to anyone who bathes under it. A similar story also exists at Segara Anak Lake where Dewi Anjani, the guardian of Mount Rinjani, resides.
